Grahan is a shattered tale of love and war
Grahan, on Disney+Hotstar, is a thrilling political drama series that keeps us on the edge of our seats the entire time. It depicts two different stories that are bind together through one beautifully romantic tale and are through the tragic 1984 Anti-Sikh riots. It is, more than anything, about a most powerful and influential love story of Manu (Manjeet Chhabra) and Rishi. Amrita Singh is Rishi's daughter and is an IPS officer who resolves to investigate the perpetrators who had led the 1984 riots. Sanjay Singh is the chief antagonist here, among others.
The story is mostly set in Bokaro, Jharkhand and is apparently inspired by real life political situations. Setting aside all the politics and the worldly chaos and hubbub, what eventually blows away my mind is the tender romance between Rishi and Manu. They are too human to face a riot, really. They love too much to know anything of the war. Though he is forced to perpetrate an attack on the innocent lives of the Sikhs of Bokaro, Manu finds a clever way to rescue as many lives as possible. He achieves this by being on their side- the side with more power- thus making himself appear as one of them in front of Sanjay Singh, who had started it all. He encourages his teammates to attack on shops and luxuries in order to divert their focus from taking human lives to other material things. His love being his foremost priority, Rishi Ranjan's ultimate purpose is to save Manu and her family, though himself being a Hindu. He is deceived by his best friend yet he struggles through it all to fight for his love.
In the modern day story which is set in 2016, he is being accused of leading the riots. His daughter Amrita is shattered when she gets to learn about the rumours that gets around deeming her father as a perpetrator of the 1984 riots and that her mother is alive. Later it is revealed that her biological mother is Manu. Amrita, who always wanted to set things right, discovers the harsh realities surrounding the dark political situation in the country. We later in the end get to learn that everything is not as it seems; it can be darker in fact.
